Many people in the world have no or limited access to electricity. The main reasons are: the remoteness of the regions where they live, the long distance to the nearest grid connection point and last but not least the high cost to get connected to the national grid.

In Africa the connection the electrification rate is well below 25% in the rural areas with over 65% of the population in these same areas.

Off grid decentralised autonomous hybrid energy systems, directly connected to the local communities for housing, retail, business and industrial uses will be the only feasable solution to help create wealth and develop the local areas to a higher living standards. Decisive reasons for companies and industries to locate are access to energy, water and infrastructure, clients and workers.

The price for these energy solutions using solar as the main source of energy are already very economical in comparison to traditional energy sources like coal, oil and diesel. The traditional systems require a relative low upfront investment versus renewable energy sources. The operational and environmental costs on the other hand are significantly higher.

The pay-back period for the average solar off grid solution is less than 4 years in high solar irradiation regions like Africa and South America. As the market for renewable energy is growing the costs for off grid hybrid energy systems are declining significantly. As the price for fossil fuels like diesel and crude oil will rise over the coming years the pay back period will decrease even more.

SLE Global together with its solar partners are convinced that a hybrid solarsystem in combination with another (renewable) energy back up source is the best solution in high irradiation regions like Africa. In the communities that SLE Global will build this hybrid energy system is part of the unique character of the project.
